Get to Know This Coffee
What is single origin coffee?
Single origin means all the beans come from one country. Instead of blending beans from multiple origins, single origin showcases the unique characteristics of where the coffee was grown—the soil, altitude, climate, and processing methods all shape the flavor. Think of it like wine regions: a Bordeaux tastes different from a Napa Valley because of where it's from.
Why choose single origin over a blend?
Single origins let you taste what makes each coffee-growing region unique. Blends are designed for consistency and balance—they're reliable and delicious. Single origins are more like exploring: you'll taste the distinct characteristics of Brazilian coffee, learn what you love, and understand how origin affects flavor. If you're curious about coffee beyond your daily cup, single origins are your classroom.
How should I store single origin coffee?
Same as any fresh coffee: airtight container, cool and dark place, away from moisture and heat. Single origin beans are fresh-roasted and shipped within 48 hours, so they're at peak flavor when they arrive. Use them within 2-3 weeks of opening for best results. Don't refrigerate or freeze—it introduces moisture and ruins the beans.
What makes Brazilian coffee different from other origins?
Brazil grows coffee at lower altitudes with natural processing, creating smooth, chocolatey, low-acid coffee that's approachable and consistent. Compare this to Ethiopian coffee (bright, fruity, high-acid) or Colombian (balanced, caramel-forward). Brazilian beans are workhorses—reliable, versatile, and forgiving. They're why espresso blends exist and why your morning drip tastes good without drama.
Is this good for cold brew?
Not ideal. Brazilian natural process works better hot—the body and sweetness shine in espresso or drip. For cold brew, you want brighter, higher-acid coffees that stay lively when cold (like Ethiopian or Central American washed coffees). Brazilian coffee can taste flat and muted in cold brew. Stick with hot methods for this one.
What does "natural process" mean?
Natural process means the whole coffee cherry dries around the bean before it's removed—instead of washing the fruit off immediately. This adds sweetness, body, and fruity notes because the bean absorbs sugars from the cherry as it dries. It's the oldest processing method and creates fuller-bodied, sweeter coffee. Brazilian naturals are famously smooth and chocolatey because of this method.
Why is Brazilian coffee low in acid?
Brazilian coffee typically grows at lower altitudes compared to high-altitude origins like Ethiopia or Kenya, which naturally creates less acidity in the beans. The natural processing method also reduces perceived acidity by adding body and sweetness as the bean dries inside the fruit. If you have a sensitive stomach or just prefer smoother coffee, Brazilian beans are your friend.
Why is this Brazilian coffee roasted to a medium profile?
Single origins are roasted to a medium roast to showcase what makes each origin unique. Darker roasts add roasty, caramelized flavors that can mask the distinct characteristics of coffees. Medium roast preserves the chocolate and caramel notes that make Brazilian beans distinctive while keeping enough body for espresso. If you prefer darker, bolder coffee, check out our espresso blends and dark roast blends.
