Get to Know This Coffee
What is single origin coffee?
Single origin means all the beans come from one country. Instead of blending beans from multiple origins, single origin showcases the unique characteristics of where the coffee was grown—the soil, altitude, climate, and processing methods all shape the flavor. Think of it like wine regions: a Bordeaux tastes different from a Napa Valley because of where it's from.
Why choose single origin over a blend?
Single origins let you taste what makes each coffee-growing region unique. Blends are designed for consistency and balance—they're reliable and delicious. Single origins are more like exploring: you'll taste the distinct characteristics of Brazilian coffee, learn what you love, and understand how origin affects flavor. If you're curious about coffee beyond your daily cup, single origins are your classroom.
What makes Yirgacheffe coffee special?
Yirgacheffe is Ethiopia's most famous coffee region, grown at extreme altitudes (1,800-2,200 meters) in southern Ethiopia. The combination of high elevation, volcanic soil, wild heirloom varietals, and expert processing creates bright citrus, floral jasmine notes, and tea-like complexity you won't find anywhere else. Yirgacheffe washed coffees are known for clean lemon brightness and delicate florals—it's why this region commands premium prices and has devoted fans worldwide.
Is this good for pour over?
Absolutely—this is where Yirgacheffe washed coffee shines brightest. Pour over brewing highlights the clean acidity, delicate florals, and vibrant citrus notes that make this region legendary. The slower extraction brings out the tea-like finish and complex lemon flavors that get lost in other brewing methods. If you have a V60, Chemex, or Kalita, Yirgacheffe is the origin to showcase.
How does Yirgacheffe compare to other Ethiopian regions?
Yirgacheffe is known for bright citrus (lemon, bergamot) and delicate florals (jasmine). Sidama tends toward berry notes (blueberry, strawberry) with more sweetness. Guji often brings tropical fruit and stone fruit with more body. All are high-altitude Ethiopian coffees, but Yirgacheffe is the most floral and tea-like—it's the classic Ethiopian profile that made the country famous for coffee.
How should I store single origin coffee?
Same as any fresh coffee: airtight container, cool and dark place, away from moisture and heat. Single origin beans are fresh-roasted and shipped within 48 hours, so they're at peak flavor when they arrive. Use them within 2-3 weeks of opening for best results. Don't refrigerate or freeze—it introduces moisture and ruins the beans.
Why is this roasted to a medium profile?
We roast all single origins to a medium profile to preserve what makes each region unique. Darker roasts add roasty, caramelized flavors that can mask the distinct characteristics of different origins—the soil, altitude, and processing methods that make Brazilian coffee taste different from Ethiopian or Colombian. Medium roast lets the origin shine through. If you prefer darker, bolder coffee, check out our espresso blends and dark roast blends designed for roasty flavor.
