Get to Know This Coffee
What is single origin coffee?
Single origin means all the beans come from one country. Instead of blending beans from multiple origins, single origin showcases the unique characteristics of where the coffee was grown—the soil, altitude, climate, and processing methods all shape the flavor. Think of it like wine regions: a Bordeaux tastes different from a Napa Valley because of where it's from.
Why choose single origin over a blend?
Single origins let you taste what makes each coffee-growing region unique. Blends are designed for consistency and balance—they're reliable and delicious. Single origins are more like exploring: you'll taste the distinct characteristics of Brazilian coffee, learn what you love, and understand how origin affects flavor. If you're curious about coffee beyond your daily cup, single origins are your classroom.
Why is this roasted to a medium profile?
We roast all single origins to a medium profile to preserve what makes each region unique. Darker roasts add roasty, caramelized flavors that can mask the distinct characteristics of different origins—the soil, altitude, and processing methods that make Brazilian coffee taste different from Ethiopian or Colombian. Medium roast lets the origin shine through. If you prefer darker, bolder coffee, check out our espresso blends and dark roast blends designed for roasty flavor.
Why is Colombian coffee so balanced?
Colombian coffee grows at high altitudes (typically 1,200-2,000 meters) where cooler temperatures slow cherry maturation, developing more complex sugars and balanced acidity. The combination of volcanic soil, consistent rainfall, and careful washed processing creates that sweet spot between brightness and body—not too acidic like Kenya, not too mellow like Brazil. It's why Colombian coffee works everywhere.
What does "washed process" mean?
Washed process means the coffee cherry's fruit is removed before the beans dry—creating a cleaner, brighter cup compared to natural process. After harvesting, cherries are pulped to remove the fruit, then fermented in water to break down remaining mucilage, and finally washed clean before drying. This method highlights the bean's inherent characteristics rather than adding fruity sweetness from the cherry, which is why washed coffees taste cleaner and more defined.
Can I use this for espresso?
You can, but it's not ideal. Colombian washed coffees shine brightest in filter methods (drip, pour over, French press) where their balanced acidity and clean flavors come through. As espresso, they can taste a bit thin or sharp compared to lower-acid origins like Brazil. If you want Colombian characteristics in espresso, look for Colombian beans in our espresso blends where they're paired with fuller-bodied origins.
What makes Colombian coffee different from other origins?
Colombia grows coffee at high altitudes with volcanic soil and washed processing, creating balanced, versatile coffee that works everywhere. Compare this to Ethiopian coffee (brighter, more floral and fruity) or Brazilian (lower acid, chocolatey, heavier body). Colombian beans are the sweet spot—enough acidity to stay interesting, enough body to feel substantial, and clean processing that keeps it approachable. They're why "Colombian coffee" became shorthand for quality.
How should I store single origin coffee?
Same as any fresh coffee: airtight container, cool and dark place, away from moisture and heat. Single origin beans are fresh-roasted and shipped within 48 hours, so they're at peak flavor when they arrive. Use them within 2-3 weeks of opening for best results. Don't refrigerate or freeze—it introduces moisture and ruins the beans.
